Paul Laursen is co-founder of both Athletica and HIIT Science. He is Chief Scientist of Athletica and CEO of HIIT Science. He holds a PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Queensland and is an Adjunct Professor of Exercise Physiology at Auckland University of Technology. He previously served as physiology manager for High Performance Sport New Zealand, leading physiology for the country's Olympic athletes.
His research spans high-intensity interval training, heart rate variability, thermoregulation, training science, and the application of AI to training prescription. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, cited over 25,700 times, and co-authored Science and Application of High-Intensity Interval Training (Laursen & Buchheit, Human Kinetics, 2019), the foundational text on which Athletica is built.
Paul co-hosts the Training Science Podcast with Martin Buchheit and hosts the Athletes Compass podcast. He is an Ironman athlete and endurance coach based in Revelstoke, British Columbia. At Athletica he leads the translation of sport science into the platform's computational models and its AI coach.
